Ponta do Ouro Marine Safari

The Experience

Ponta do Ouro sits in the far south of Mozambique, a short distance from the South African border, and the drive down from Maputo crosses the Katembe bridge and then runs through a stretch of Maputo National Park where giraffe and elephant are often standing near the road. It takes roughly two hours, and the road has improved a great deal in recent years, but conditions change and it is worth asking before you set off.

The town itself is small and low-rise: sand streets, beach bars, dive shops and a long stretch of open water. It is busiest over South African school holidays and in December, and close to empty in May.

The Dolphins

What makes Ponta unusual is that its bottlenose dolphins are resident, not migratory. Individual animals have been identified and followed here for decades by the research centre in town, which is also why the swims are regulated rather than free-for-all: numbers in the water are limited, boats keep their distance, nobody touches or chases, and the animals decide whether to stay. If an operator promises you a guaranteed swim, that is a reason to use a different one.

Under the Water

The reefs off Ponta are the reason divers keep coming back. Sites are reached by launching through the surf rather than from a jetty, which is part of the experience. Depending on the season you can expect ragged-tooth sharks, rays, turtles and large schooling fish, with whale sharks and manta rays more likely in the warm months. Ponta is also a good place to do a first dive, because the conditions are forgiving and the operators are used to beginners.

Whales and Turtles

Humpbacks migrate north along this coast from about July to October, and you can often see them breaching from the beach without going out at all. Between November and February, loggerhead and leatherback turtles come ashore at night to nest; guided walks run in the season and are strictly controlled, because light and noise disturb a nesting female.

Who is this for?

Anyone who wants the ocean rather than the bush, and does not mind sand in everything. It works as a long day trip from Maputo, but Ponta rewards staying the night: the water is calmest early, and that is when the boats go out.
