Best time to visit Maputo: A Seasonal Guide

Deciding when to visit Maputo depends largely on what you want to do. While the city is a year-round destination, the surrounding experiences—like safaris and beach trips—have distinct seasons.
The Dry Season (May to October)
This is generally considered the best time to visit Southern Mozambique. The weather is cooler, less humid, and there is very little rain. Daytime temperatures average around 25°C (77°F), making it perfect for walking tours and city exploration.
Why go now?
- Wildlife Viewing: Vegetation is thinner in Maputo Special Reserve, making it easier to spot animals.
- Whale Watching: Humpback whales migrate along the coast from July to November.
- Comfort: Lower humidity means more comfortable nights and days.
The Wet Season (November to April)
Summer in Maputo is hot, humid, and vibrant. Temperatures can soar above 30°C (86°F). While rain showers are frequent, they are usually short and intense, often followed by sunshine.
Why go now?
- Birding: Migratory birds arrive, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
- Turtle Nesting: From November to February, leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches of Ponta do Ouro and Maputo Special Reserve.
- Lush Landscapes: The bush is green and thick, offering beautiful photographic opportunities (though harder game viewing).
Verdict
For the best all-around experience combining city, safari, and beach, aim for May, June, or September. You'll get the best weather without the peak holiday crowds of December.
